Rainbow Etude (1996)

Rainbow Etude was commissioned by the American Dance Legacy Institute as part of the first volume on its Dance Legacy Series.  Rainbow Etude, choreographed by Donald McKayle in 1996, draws its theme and some its movement from McKayle’s signature work Rainbow ‘Round My Shoulder (1959)that explored the  experience of men on chain gangs in the American South.  Rainbow Etude is performed to traditional chain gang songs sung a cappella by a male quartet and can be arranged for as many dancers as necessary.
